The Ride
Six Flags Worlds of Adventure wanted a new type of rides to really help kick off the park. They contacted the people at Intamin AG to build America's first inverted impulse coaster. Superman Ultimate Escape was born and was a instant hit. Intamin AG was no stranger to this type of coaster because their prototype, Linear Gale was already greatly received in Japan. The one difference was that Linear Gale had only two vertical spike, Superman Ultimate Escape was given a new twist with one vertical spike and one twisted one. On May 1st 2000 S:UE blasted off on it inaugural run. Along with the new twist on this coaster, there is another new element. This coaster contains a holding brake on the vertical spike. The brake briefly holds you 18 stories above the ground, while you're looking straight down.
The Experience
Riders board a 26 row train with 2 sets abreast. The train starts off an is launched by thru LIM's and start to climb the front twisted spike. Then the cars fall back and hit a second acceleration period. The trains climb the back spike and fall forward through the station and are again accelerated up the front spike, but this time the train makes it the whole way to the top. Then it's a fall back through the station and to the top of the back vertical spike, but instead of falling the trains are held for a few seconds. Then it's back through the station and partially up the forward spike and then the train rolls smoothly back into the station.
