The Ride
Roar! opened on May 2, 1998 at Six Flags America in Largo Maryland. When Marine World was transforming into a Six Flags park, they wanted to add a woodie to their coaster line-up. When they saw Great Coasters International's twisted layout they immediatly contacted them to build a version of Roar! Great Coasters International started to tweak the original Roar plan to make Roar' sister coaster better then the first. The final plans were made and the coaster opened on May 14, 1999. GCI lengthened the track circuit from 3,200 feet to 3,467. They also added a few extra elements. The most pronounced difference between the first and the second Roar are the trains. The east coaster Roar uses Philadelphia Toboggan Co. trains, however the west coast Roar uses GCI's Millennium Flyer rolling stock, giving the new coaster a nostalgic look from the 1920's.
The Experience
Roar uses CGI's Millenium Flyer trains to carry riders through it's crazy layout. Once the trains are loaded a 90 degree curve leads the train to the lift hill. The lift carries the train up 90 feet and then hurles them down the steep, twisted drop. The track wraps around into a fan curve, a 270 degree upward spiral, that sends the trains into a camelback hump. After the hump, the trains are propelled up and around another fan curve and over the pre-lift hill curve. After diving down the turn the train cruises over a small hill and into a 270 degree turn. The train is lead into the tunneled section of the ride. As the train exits the tunnel and retraces the first fan curve. Then it's the final dash to the brakes, and a quick turnaround into the station.
